Myrcianthes pungens or Guabiyu is a medium sized tree, having a height of about 10 m, having a lot of pubescent branches. The leaves are petiole, stiff, alternate, oval oblong, obtuse and acuminate with a lenghth of 4–7 cm, with a heavy green color on the outside and lighter on the bellow side. It has rough bark of slightly brown color with large number of removable scales of the bark. The flowers are small and whitish having aroma.It presents small, globose fruits of about 1 cm in diameter. Fruit color is dark purple when they mature. Guabiyu fruits are sweet and edible with pulp and having a large seed. Guabiyu blooms in September.
